The area of a shape is a measure of the space that a shape takes up.   It is usually measured in cm².

The perimeter of a shape is the distance around it?  It is usually measured in cm or metres.

Can you find the areas and perimeters of these shapes and then investigate the questions below.

Can you draw a shape that has an area equal to its perimeter?

Can you do this with a range of different shapes?

Can you make a shape that has an area that is less than its perimeter?

Can you draw a shape that has an area that is more than its perimeter?

What do you notice about the shapes?

What is the greatest difference you can achieve between your area and perimeter? Is it possible to draw a shape where the perimeter is double the area?
 Key Stage 1

With a pegboard and elastic bands what shapes can you make?

Can you make two shapes that are the same but of different sizes?

Which shapes can’t you make?

Investigate.
