As I was unpacking my Christmas decorations I
came across an old bag labelled: |

Glorious Gold and Stunning
Silver Baubles |

Pack of 10 |
I took out one of the baubles and
unwrapped it carefully. It was a glorious gold one. How many baubles of
each colour could there be in the bag?
If
you had a pack with 20 baubles in, how many different
combinations would there be of gold and silver baubles? |
How
many baubles would you have to take out before you could be sure
you knew how many there were of each colour? |
. |
Would the number of combinations of baubles
change if you had Perfect Purple baubles as well? Could you predict
the number of combinations for any set of baubles in different colours? |
Key Stage 2
How likely would it
be that you would take out a glorious gold bauble on the first go?
Which baubles could
be in the bag so that it is impossible to take out a stunning
silver bauble?
Try
a similar task with beads instead of baubles so that you have ten in
your bag and you take one out. Record the colour before putting it back
in and trying again. Were you surprised by your results?
