Folding

Up

Start with a piece of A4 paper.

Fold it once and then open it up … what shapes have you made?

Fold it again, then open it up … what shapes do you have now?

Do the shapes change if you continue folding without opening up the paper each time?

Fold a piece of paper in half. What do you notice about the two shapes you have made? How many times can you fold your paper in half?

How many folds would you need so that you had 8 different shapes?

Do you get different shapes if you start with a different size or shape of paper?

How many triangles can you see?  Can you give someone instructions to fold this shape?

What is the least number of folds you would need to get a hexagon?

Key Stage 2:

If you fold the same shape from a piece of A4 paper and a piece of A3 paper, what will happen to the area?
